Sam Ulmer Firecrackers DFW Ulmer Gold, Fastpitch Champions 14U

Sam Ulmer

Head - Coach Manager

Coach Sam has coached youth sports (as a non-parent) for more than 20 years and fastpitch for the last 4 years (last 2 as a non-parent). He has shown great success with building a team from scratch and competing for and winning multiple championships in a short time. Prior to coaching he was a multi-sport athlete with about 12 years as a catcher/middle infielder. Sam Ulmer was born and raised in Alabama and is a die-hard Crimson Tide fan, so when he is not on the softball field coaching, he is usually watching Alabama ANYTHING sports related. Sam is a retired United States Air Force officer and has a very high regard for teamwork and discipline. If you were to ask him what qualities are most important in a player, he would quickly say TEAM FIRST and HARD WORK!

Sam Ulmer Firecrackers DFW Ulmer Kevin Cornelius

Kevin Cornelius

Assistant Coach/Hitting Coach

As a multi-sport athlete, Kevin developed a love for baseball as a youth while playing many seasons as an all-star middle infielder and his skillset grew while playing high school ball at Royse City ISD. The advancement in understanding of the game came as he played five years of adult softball and coached recreational, select baseball and softball for 10 years including 8u, 10u, 12u, and 14u age groups. He has coached as an assistant with Coach Ulmer for 3 successful years. A natural teacher with a high attention to detail, yet patient demeanor, Kevin finds the most enjoyable part of the game today is teaching students to see the fullness of the game, apply the softball lessons as life skills and have a blast while competitively achieving their goals.

Sam Ulmer Firecrackers DFW Ulmer Hayley Baker Belmont University

Hayley Baker

Outfield/Catching/Hitting Coach

Hayley began playing softball at the age of seven. She started her competitive softball career in Las Vegas. Upon moving to Rockwall, Texas she played four years of varsity softball at Rockwall HS where she was a three-time All-State catcher. She played travel ball in DFW where she played catcher, outfield and infield and competed at PGF, ASA, and TCS national events. She played NCAA Division I softball at Belmont University where she was an outfielder and utility player and hit a career high .346 her senior season. She received numerous awards for both athletic and academic achievements during her career including Ohio Valley Conference All-Newcomer Team, three-time Academic All-District selection, two-time Academic All-America selection, and Belmont’s nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year in 2019. Hayley began coaching youth softball during her high school years giving private lessons, coaching camps, and as an assistant coach with Coach Ulmer. Hayley is currently attending medical school at UT Southwestern in Dallas. Softball brings the opportunity to be competitive, continually improve, and create lifelong friendships which is why Hayley loves the game and has continued to be involved through coaching. She is inspired by many female athletes especially Jessica Mendoza who inspired her as a player and as a pioneer for females in professional sports.

Sam Ulmer Firecrackers DFW Ulmer Curt Larson

Curt Larson

Assistant Coach

Curt currently lives in Ardmore, Oklahoma and has been coaching youth softball for over 10 years. He has been actively involved in coaching both youth basketball and softball total of 17 years. Curt has more than 10 years experience playing first base and center field. His greatest joy of coaching is to help players grow to become better athletes and prepare them for playing softball at the highest levels possible. If you were to ask him what he loves most about fastpitch, he would say, “I love the competitiveness of travel fastpitch softball.”

Sam Ulmer Firecrackers DFW Ulmer Brad Hagman

Brad Hagman

Assistant Coach

Coach Brad grew up in the suburbs of Chicago, but has lived in The Great State of Texas for the past 30 years. He joined the coaching staff of the Texas Travelers NTX in 2018. He previously has assisted other softball teams in various capacities. He has also been an assistant coach in youth baseball for the past 4 years. As a youth he played soccer, football and baseball. In baseball he was a pitcher and also played 2nd base.
He has loved playing the sports that he has played, but nothing has captivated him as much as fastpitch softball. He loves speed of the game, the resilience of these young ladies, their competitiveness, and their sportsmanship under difficult situations. The part that he loves the most is their dedication to be the best that they can be. It’s exciting to watch a tremendous athlete shine, but the thing that makes him smile the most is seeing that awkward kid find herself. The biggest reward that he could receive is helping a young athlete reach their own potential, wherever that might take them on and off the field.

Before Commerce, she played her first two year at Division I, University of Missouri-Kansas City. While there, she earned first team all-conference as a freshman. This is her first year coaching youth softball but has coached at many camps during her playing career. She will be the Texas A&M Commerce graduate assistant coach starting in Fall of 2019. She loves softball because of all the values that it teaches you, not just in softball, but in life. She wants to be able to make an impact in young softball players’ lives because she knows how influential a coach can be.

Firecrackers DFW is always looking for talented student athletes to join their program develop and compete.
For nearly 30 years, the Firecrackers have produced softball champions at the club level.  But winning isn't the team's primary goal, according to head coach Tony Rico.  He wants to cultivate an environment that develops leaders on and off the field.  Rico prizes culture over championships.  In his coaches and players, he is looking for integrity, dignity, and poise.  Rico believes that winning is a byproduct of culture -- not the other way around.

What we're looking for is someone not just looking for the Firecracker brand or some of the other top clubs to get them where they're going, For us in particular, what defines us is not our success -- we've had plenty of it -- it's our culture.
